A year ago, general manager A.J. Preller depleted the Padres farm system with major trades. Gone were 2014 first-round draft pick Trea Turner, top pitching prospect Joe Ross (who showed great promise with the Washington Nationals this year), outfielder Mallex Smith who profiles as a Michael Bourn-type leadoff hitter, Max Fried, and others.
But with the recent trades, the farm system is on the rebound. This article from the Union-Tribune shows who the top prospects are now for the Padres.
Hint: shortstop is looking a lot better than it did a year ago.
